She is Good

This body of work that I created is meant to answer the question “how can we be beautifully broken?” I do this by emphasizing the processes that clay goes through and how that is a reflection of the transformation that we as humans go through. Clay must go through so many stages before it can be classified as "pottery" including a hot kiln usually more than once. Art can speak to the heart about the human condition and I have never felt a clearer sense of my humanity than when creating art, especially made of clay.

She is Broken

In the process sometimes the clay is too heavy, it collapses or becomes too dry and cracks. I decided to lean into these effects as a way to express the deeper meaning of what it means to be beautifully broken. It is through this process that I have come to terms with the beauty of broken things and broken people because it is simply an act of admitting that we are human and have to fail before we succeed, but our successes are all the more worth it because of the journey it took us to get us there.

The Breaking Point

This is something that can go unnoticed for people who look fine on the outside but are really
struggling on the inside with anxiety, depression, or purely just the pressures that life throws our way. This is a reality I've seen unfold in the art I make as it quite literally falls apart despite my best attempts to keep it
together. I decided to lean into this by leaving some of my pieces unfired so that their nature is by definition
fragile as we are; from dust we came and to dust we shall return.

Broken Reflection

This is the first mirror in the series that is meant to reflect back the onlookers shattered image and display in a visceral way how we are all broken. Lies from the enemy have brought us low, but we are not too far gone even when it feels like we are overcome. The gold shining through the cracks promises a future beauty that is possible when we come to terms with our own brokenness and realize no one is perfect and all are in need of being made new.

Broken Surrender

Some of the figures are left unfired to emphasize their fragility and the impermanence of their broken condition.
By using raw and fired terracotta clay to make female figures, my work shows the potential humans have to be
made beautiful from our brokenness. The figures express the internal battle all humans face by giving a
physical representation of wounded people who cling to their broken nature to hold themselves together.

The Lion and the Lamb

The sacrificial lamb reflected in the mirror is meant to be a figure of reassurance in knowing that we are not alone in our brokenness, but the God of all the earth was broken for us so that we may not longer be bound by our sin and shame. The lamb of God has taken away the sin of the world and those who believe in Jesus are no longer seen for what they have done, but what Christ did for them on the cross.
